Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR)

Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) is an evidence-based technique that helps address tension, stress, and anxiety by systematically tensing and relaxing muscle groups throughout the body. This VR application enhances the experience with visual guidance and immersive environments, helping older adults and veterans achieve deeper states of relaxation.

Clinical Validation

  • Enhances Relaxation Beyond Traditional GuidelinesA novel VR-based self-training program showed that PMR practiced in virtual environments (e.g., tranquil natural settings) led to greater reduction in tension than standard worksheet-guided instruction.
  • Promotes Deep Relaxation via Presence and Personalization A pilot study protocol (now published) demonstrated that pairing personalized VR scenarios with PMR enhanced relaxation and lowered anxiety—highlighting VR’s ability to amplify associative relaxation and mental imagery.
  • Acts as a Low-Intensity Stress Intervention for Mental Health A systematic review found VR relaxation techniques, including PMR and nature-based environments, effectively reduce stress and anxiety, suggesting VR-PMR’s practicality in mental health care.
